It is a pleasure to announce the upcoming theoretical physics colloquium:
Daniel Loss, "Topological Bound and Edge States in Low Dimensions"
Location: Uni Zurich, Irchel Campus, Lecture Hall Y16G05
Date and Time: Monday, 11 March 2013, 16:45h (16:30h Coffee)
I will present some recent results [1,2,3] on exotic quantum states in low-dimensional systems with topological phases. These states can emerge as bound states in one and two dimensions due to the presence of spin orbit interaction and/or external magnetic fields that induce topological gaps via backscattering. Examples are fractionally charged fermions of Jackiw-Rebbi type, Majorana fermions, or edge states in quantum Hall systems, both in the integer and fractional filling factor regime. I will discuss simple lattice models, such as chains, ladders, and strips and show that there are topological phases which permit fermions with non-Abelian braiding statistics--believed to be useful for topological quantum computing. These models can be implemented in optical lattices.
