Hi all, today we'll hear from Shishir Khandelwal; see below for title and abstract. -joe Title: Heat engines for Rindler observers Abstract: The Unruh effect has been a popular topic of research in quantum field theory for more than four decades. Recent years have also seen an increasing interest in it from the viewpoint of relativistic quantum information. However, it is largely unexplored in the context of the thermodynamics of quantum systems. Probably one of the first works in this direction was recently published, in which a quantum version of the Otto cycle using an accelerated qubit was proposed, which relies on quantum vacuum fluctuations due to the Unruh effect, instead of actual thermal reservoirs. A framework for heat and work extraction was developed using the Unruh-DeWitt model and perturbation theory to the second order. However, the framework restricts the class of thermal processes that can be studied. We generalise it to include a larger class of thermodynamic processes. Furthermore, we extend the model to one with an arbitrary accelerating n-level quantum system and reproduce a previously known result on the efficiency of a non-relativistic n-level quantum Otto cycle.

YQIS Conference and CoQuS Summer School 2018 (Vienna, Sep. 17-21)

FYI ==== Dear colleagues, We would like to cordially invite you to the conference for Young Quantum Information Scientists (YQIS) and the Complex Quantum Systems (CoQuS) summer school who will jointly organise their events. Vienna, with its long history in Quantum mechanical research, will be the hosting city for this event from 17th to 21st of September 2018. The goal is to bring together young and experienced quantum information researchers to increase contact and knowledge sharing in the community. We provide a platform for young researchers to learn new topics and improve presentation skills. The YQIS conference and CoQuS summer school program will have a diverse program. We would like to encourage Phd students to present their research on topics related to quantum information in the form of a talk or a poster in one of our sessions. There will be Lecture series and presentations on cutting edge science by renowned researchers as well as talks and posters of young researchers. Best, -joe Title: In Which Alice is a Know-It-All and Bob Never Learns Abstract: Bob has a black box that emits a single pure state qudit which is, from his perspective, uniformly distributed. Alice wishes to give Bob evidence that she has knowledge about the emitted state while giving him little or no information about it. We show that zero-knowledge evidencing of such knowledge is impossible in quantum relativistic protocols, extending a previous result of Horodecki et al. We also show that no such protocol can be both sound and complete. We present a new quantum relativistic protocol which we conjecture to be close to optimal in security against Alice and which reveals little knowledge to Bob, for large dimension d. We analyse its security against general attacks by Bob and restricted attacks by Alice.
