Hi all, Tomorrow we start off the new semester with the group meeting at a new time: 3pm. Ernest will give a short presentation about the recent breakthrough result by Ji et al that MIP* = RE. See https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.04383 and possibly also https://www.scottaaronson.com/blog/?p=4512 and comments for more. The result is nominally a statement about equivalence of two complexity classes, but touches on an amazing number of aspects of quantum information theory and beyond, and I look forward to an interesting discussion about it. Hi all, ***Note: we'll start a little bit later than usual --- 14:00 instead of 13:45*** This week Anian Altherr will present the results of his semester project, entitled "Quantum Stop Watches". The abstract is below. Best, -joe Title: Quantum Stop Watches Abstract: Clocks can be used to build stop watches. We show under some fair assumptions that if a clock ticks sufficiently accurately, the stop watch built with this clock can be used to estimate time accurately, too. Furthermore, we provide some evidence that a stop watch can be built using an optimal quantum clock, the Quasi-Ideal clock, which outperforms classical clocks.
