Dear all Marius Krumm from Markus Müller’s and Caslav Brukner’s group who is visiting us for two weeks will give a talk this Thursday at 15:30. The topic is: Title: Machine learning approach to problems in quantum information theory and resource theories Abstract: Machine learning has become a powerful method with many applications in science and beyond. Despite the success of machine learning, its use in quantum information theory and resource theories has been very limited so far. In this talk, we explore problems in those fields that might benefit from a machine learning approach. The focus will be on entanglement detection, detection of allowed transitions and one version of the quantum marginal problem. However, as the presented strategies only rely on some basic properties of the presented problems, it seems likely that they be can extended to other problems. The talk will be very general and is aimed at a wide audience. Best wishes, Raban

Today we'll hear from Andreas Bärtschi of Los Alamos, on "Preparation and Compression of Symmetric Pure Quantum States". For more details, see the abstract below. Best, -joe Preparation and Compression of Symmetric Pure Quantum States ================================================== In this talk I will present a deterministic scheme for the preparation of symmetric pure n-qubit quantum states (symmetric under permutation of the qubits). Implemented as a circuit, our scheme has linear depth, needs no ancilla qubits and -- used in reverse -- yields a quasilinear-depth circuit for efficient compression of symmetric pure states into logarithmically many qubits. The scheme relies on an inductive approach to prepare Dicke states |Dnk⟩, which form an orthonormal basis of the subspace of symmetric pure n-qubit states. We prepare these states, which are equal superpositions of all n-qubit states with Hamming Weight k, using O(nk) gates in O(n) depth. All properties also hold for Linear Nearest Neighbor architectures.
