>> The invention of new optical imaging technologies such as photo-activation localization microscopy (PALM), stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM), and stimulated emission depletion (STED) are having a profound impact on biological sciences.

>> I will discuss the development of photo-stable optical probes that will permit super-resolution of live cell and organism imaging for hours, days or years. We are improving the performance of Si-vacancy nanodiamonds with a new growth method, and have promising results that suggest sub-millisecond super-resolution imaging and voltage sensitive imaging of neurons with millisecond time resolution may be possible. We are also developing another class of photo-stable near-infrared probes in the IR window for tissue that should allow the simultaneous imaging of more than 12 different proteins or cells at ~ 60 frames per second. Another advantage of the new nanoparticle probes is that they particularly well suited for STED.
