With best regards, Ilona Blatter --------------------------------------------------- Date: Thursday March 29, 2012 Time: 14:00 Place: ETH Science City, HPF G 6 Host: Andreas Wallraff Hybrid quantum circuit with a superconducting qubit coupled to a spin ensemble Denis Vion CEA-Saclay, Gif-sur-Yvette Cedex (France) We report the experimental realization of a hybrid quantum circuit combining a superconducting qubit and an ensemble of electronic spins. The qubit, of the transmon type, is coherently coupled to the spin ensemble consisting of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in a diamond crystal via a frequency-tunable superconducting resonator acting as a quantum bus [1,2]. Using this circuit, we prepare arbitrary superpositions of the qubit states that we store into collective excitations of the spin ensemble and retrieve back later on into the qubit [3] with a fidelity of about 10%. By this, he meant that information could not exist without a physical information carrier (such as the ink on a piece of paper). Information may therefore be studied from a "physical perspective". The development of Quantum Information Theory, which accounts for the fact that any physical information carrier ultimately obeys the laws of quantum mechanics, is one of the consequences of this approach. Very recently, however, researchers have started to take a converse approach, studying physics from an "information-theoretic perspective".
