Hi everyone,
Tomorrow (Friday) at 17:15, there is Thomas Holenstein's inaugural
lecture in HG F30 (the Audimax). The talk is entitled "Theoretische
Kryptographie". I encourage you to attend, it should be very interesting!
Cheers,
--Frédéric
Hello,
On Tuesday next week, we will have the follwing seminar talk in the
centre. Note that the
time is earlier than usual, due to Matthias Christandl's inaugural
lecture on the same day.
Best regards,
Stefan

Title:
The foundations of statistical physics from first principles of quantum
mechanics:
deriving …
[View More]equipartition from decoupling.
[semester project]
Abstract:
The postulate of equal a priori probability lies at the very foundations
of statistical
physics. It states that in equilibrium a system is equally likely to be
in any of the
states satisfying a certain constrain, like energy conservation.
Recently, Popescu
et al gave a major step towards the understanding of the postulate from
first principles
of quantum mechanics [1]. They consider a system in contact with a large
environment
and show that for almost any pure joint state, the reduced state of the
system is
consistent with the postulated equiprobable state; in other words, any
subsystem
of a sufficiently large system will appear to follow the postulate.
Using decoupling
theorems developed by Fred [2] we generalize this result and express it
in a form
that allows for further extension.

Dear all,
I would like to invite you to my "Einführungsvorlesung" with subsequent Apéro. It will take place in ETH's Audimax on 22 February at 5.15 pm.
I would be very happy to see you there!
Matthias.
PS: It will be in German, but I don't think that will matter :)
PPS: The attached flyer shows you the way to the audimax.

Good evening,
The talk on March 1 will take place at 15:00 instead of 17:00.

Title:
Decoupling Theorems
Abstract:
The talk presents various decoupling results derived during my master
project. Decoupling theorems have proven useful in versatile applications
in the area of quantum information theory. At first we address the
question whether or not a typical physical process ocurring on one share
of a bipartite quantum system destroys the quantum mechanical correlations
between the different subsystems. The crucial mathemathical concept for
this application will be the one of "unitary almost 2-designs" and we analyze
the decoupling behaviour of these constructs.
In the second part of the talk we discuss whether decoupling of quantum
states is possible with classical operations, which has applications in
the area of quantum coding.
