Noiseless Linux thin clients

If a clean desk and a quiet office are more important to you than
fancy 3D graphics, this one might be for you. Based on the ideas of
the [1]LTSP project, we have integrated a powerful Terminal Server
into our trusty Linux setup and started rolling out cute little Thin
Clients to some early adopters.
Since their feedback has been very positive, we think now is the time
to publicly announce the availability of these machines. Read on for
the benefits you might get from choosing one of them as your office
machine...

Maintenance on file servers and server gateway

An security update on the server gateway schilt will be done on:
* Thursday, February 21th 2008 between 19:00 and 22:00
During the gateway update we will also apply an operating system
upgrade on the fileservers foostock, schibe, teutates and tamesis.
Over the entire period access to the following services may be
interupted:
* home and group directories (winhome, machome, unixhome, windata,
macdata, unixdata, astrodata)
* print services
* mail services
* web services
Please do not run any long running jobs during that time since the
file servers won't be reliably reachable during that time. Ideally you
shouldn't use any computer which relies on the mentioned services
during this time. Especially all our managed workstations (Linux,
Windows, Mac) won't be usable.
Additionally we would like to reboot our managed Linux workstations so
that we can provide some common features or applications again which
are not available with the currently running kernels, e.g. AFS,
traditional scheduling or VirtualBox.

Local root exploit for all Linux kernels from 2.6.17 to 2.6.24.1

Last weekend two local root exploits have been released to the public,
one that affects 2.6.23 up to 2.6.23.14 and 2.6.24 ([1]CVE-2008-0009,
[2]CVE-2008-0010) and [3]one that affects all versions beginning with
2.6.17 and up to 2.6.22.17, 2.6.23.15, and 2.6.24.1
([4]CVE-2008-0600). There are new kernel releases available which fix
these issues: 2.6.22.18, 2.6.23.16, and 2.6.24.2.
About half of our managed Linux workstations are already running a
patched 2.6.24.1 kernel, the rest will be rebooted this evening after
10:00pm. Please logout this evening before you go home, save all
unsafed work and don't start any long running jobs. To see if your
workstation is still affected, [5]check our Big Brother: All
workstations where the updates column ("upd") is yellow are not yet
rebooted. You may also reboot your workstation yourself earlier.
