ISG News has posted a new item, 'Migration of group directories'
We need to move most some of the group directories to a bigger fileserver.
This will be done on Thursday, 5. March, between 19:00 and 21:00.
During this time most some of the group directories (windata, macdata,
unixdata) will be limited to read-only access, and the others will have a short
interruption of availability.
To protect you from losing or corrupting any of your files, we strongly
recommend you close all open files on the group directories.
Since we have switched to generic names for our services, the group directories
will still be accessible the same way as before, so you don't have to change
anything.

ISG News has posted a new item, 'Short-term DHCP server maintenance today on
late afternoon'
We had a partial DHCP outage this morning because the failover system between
our two DHCP servers malfunctioned. The problem is currently solved only
prelimary by disabling the failover system and one of the two servers. To get
both DHCP servers working again, we scheduled a DHCP server maintenance for
today, Friday, 30th of January 2009, starting at 5pm. There may short DHCP
service outages during the maintenance. This means that initially connecting to
the network as well as renewing the DHCP lease respectively the IP address of
your computer may fail for a few minutes.

Tomorrow morning, 28th January 2009, we have to replace a broken system
harddisk on one of the group fileservers. This will cause a downtime between

This will result in a short service interruption for the following
groupdrives:
astro1, hhs, isg, iya, qo, qoarchiv, qpdata, rag, ragmast, ulp-stud, zimpol2,
zimpol3
To protect you from losing or corrupting any of your files, it is best to close

ISG News has posted a new item, 'Computer support during the holidays'
The ETH Zurich will be officially closed between Wednesday, 24th of December
2008 and Sunday, 4th of January 2009. During this time, we can only provide
limited support. Please follow these rules to save us from superfluous work:
Switch off printers
Switch off your personal workstation and notebook except for the following:
Do not switch off our managed Linux and MacOS X workstations.
We will try to follow our e-mail, but you may also have luck and meet some of
us in our IRC channel.
We also plan to maintain some of our infrastructure servers during the
holidays, but this should not disrupt any essential service.

ISG News has posted a new item, 'Solution for PDF printing problems on Windows'
We found the solution for our long term PDF printing problems, which occurred
mostly on Windows computers.
The latest workaround was to use the option print as image in Adobe Acrobat.
This was very slow, and some times even that didn't work.
Please follow the instructions in this readme, if you have such problems!

Friday, 5pm'
For kernel security updates and other maintenance work, there will be a
downtime of the e-mail server of the ETH Department of Physics from 17:00 on for

During the downtime you will not be able to access your mails on the server nor
be able to send mails via the server. The XMPP service will be affected by the

ISG News has posted a new item, 'Migration and Downtime of our Authentication
Server on Tuesday, 6pm'
On Tuesday, the 2nd of December 2008, beginning at 6pm, we will migrate the
services on our current authentication server to our high-availability cluster.
During the migration you will not be able to login on any of our managed
workstations, home and group drives or web services. Existing login sessions on
workstations should survive the downtime, but it is usually better if you log
out before migration. Additionally, *.dhcp.phys.ethz.ch dynamic hostnames will
not work either.
