Dear colleagues, this Wednesday we have a colloquium about Quantum computer - dream and realization, 2. Juni 2004 Prof. Rainer Blatt Universität Innsbruck Computational operations always rely on real physical processes, which are data input, data representation in a memory, data manipulation using algorithms and finally, the data output. With conventional computers all the processes are classical processes and can be described accordingly. Theoretically, it is known for several years now that certain computations could be processed much more efficiently using quantum mechanical operations. Therefore, there it would be desirable to built a quantum computer. This requires the implementation of quantum bits (qubits), quantum registers and quantum gates and the development of quantum algorithms. In this talk, several techniques for the realization of a quantum computer will be presented and compared. Special emphasis will be given to the ion storage and laser cooling techniques which are currently investigated for an application with quantum computers. First experimental results with trapped Ca+ ions in linear traps will be presented and discussed. Dear colleagues, this Wednesday we have a colloquium about Out-of-This-World Physics: Black Holes in the Lab, 26. Mai 2004 Greg Landsberg Brown University "If the scale of quantum gravity is as low as a TeV, as has been proposed by Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos, and Dvali a few years ago, one of its most dramatic manifestations would be copious production of miniature black holes at the CERN's LHC accelerator, qualifying the latter for a black-hole factory. These rapidly evaporating black holes could serve as sensitive probes of quantum gravity effects, topology of extra dimensions, and as a laboratory to produce new particles with the mass ~100 GeV. I'll discuss black hole production and decay mechanisms at future colliders and the opportunities for cosmic ray detectors to observe black holes in ultra-high-energy cosmic ray collisions. Using the Higgs boson as an example, I'll demonstrate that it can be found in the decays of black holes as early as in the first hour of operation of the LHC, even with incomplete detectors." Dear colleagues, this Wednesday we have a colloquium about Ultrafast electronic and structural changes in liquids probed by Ultrafast X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, 12. Mai 2004 Majed Chergui EPFL "The first event of any light induced process is the rearrangement of charges, which in turn triggers structural changes in the system, be it a solid, a molecule or a protein. Ultrafast laser spectroscopy allows to follow in "real-time" the electronic and structural changes. However, in the latter case the information has to be indirectly extracted. Ideally, a tool is needed that delivers information about both the structural and electronic structure on the time scale over which they take place. We have recently developed a pump-probe scheme based on the use of femtosecond lasers coupled to ultrashort picosecond X-ray pulses from a synchrotron, and studied the photoinduced cycle of a coordination chemistry complex, Ruthenium-tris-bipyridine, in aqueous solutions. X-ray Near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) delivers a high degree of insight into the changes of the valence orbitals of the metal atom, while the Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) delivers information about the structural changes. Our results will be presented and compared to simulations of the spectra. In addition, we also demonstrate an optical-X-ray cross-correlator with femtosecond resolution to be used with future sources." Dear colleagues, this Wednesday we have a colloquium about Kinematics, Equilibrium and Shape by L.A. Bunimovich Georgia Institute. of Technology "Consider a gas of N identical particles inside a container. Then we would expect that after a sufficiently long time the particles will occupy the entire container and will be distributed there uniformly. A goal of this talk is to demonstrate that both these expectations are generically not true. This seems to contradict to the basic principles of statistical mechanics, but, in fact, it does not. This effect of the container's shape is likely to be observable in a lab." Dear colleagues, this Wednesday we have a colloquium about Superconducting structures for quantum computing, 28. April 2004 Gianni Blatter Theoretical Physics, ETH Zuerich "Quantum information holds the promise for novel cryptographic and computational schemes. Their implementation requires new types of `quantum' hardware which fulfills two conflicting requirements, controllability and simultaneous protection from the environment. The quantum optics-, solid state-, and NMR communities pursue major programs with the goal to achieve quantum control on manmade structures. The state of art involves assemblies of trapped ions performing specific tasks (controlled NOT gate, simple algorithms), a tailored molecule factorizing 15 via an NMR pulse sequence, the first measurement of an individual spin on a quantum dot, and controlled gate operations in superconducting structures. While these achievements look very promising, further advances in design and fabrication are needed in order to achieve the fault tolerance required for quantum computing. Here, we concentrate on superconducting devices and discuss novel design elements implemented in a charge- and flux-frustrated superconducting qubit with tetrahedral symmetry. Important new features are a relaxed fabricational constraint on the Josephson junctions and potentially long decoherence times due to a quadratic noise-susceptibility. Also, this device involves a simple idle state with a doubly degenerate ground state which does not suffer from strong decoherence via phonon radiation, one of the most dangerous sources of decoherence in superconducting quantum devices." Colloquium UniZH/ETHZ Summer 2004 starts next week on April 14

Dear colleagues, for this week we have no colloquium planned. The first colloquium of this semester will be held on Wed, April 14: Alexander Kosovichev Stanford University Sunquakes and Helioseismology "The interior of the Sun is not transparent to electromagnetic radiation, and thus it is not accessible by traditional astronomical techniques. However, it is transparent to acoustic waves. These waves are excited by turbulent convection near the solar surface, and propagate through the interior. The properties of the waves, frequencies and travel times, depend on physical conditions of the solar plasma (temperature, density, chemical composition, flow velocity). Therefore, measurements of the wave properties provide powerful diagnostic methods for probing the stellar interior. I review the basic principles of helioseismology, and present recent observational results from the SOHO space mission and ground-based networks. In particular, I discuss the structure of the energy-generating core, global circulation of the Sun, and the mechanisms of sunspots and solar activity."
