Ben,
you may want to take a look at the ALPS documentation and also the extensive set of online tutorials. For the model definitions take a look at http://alps.comp-phys.org/mediawiki/index.php/Tutorials:ModelHOWTO

Good afternoon Dr. Trebst,
My name is Ben Criger, I'm a doctoral candidate at the Institute for Quantum Computing. I'm looking to begin using DMRG to find the ground state of a Hamiltonian, subject to the restriction that the state is a matrix product state of small, known bond dimension. I noticed that ALPS is set up to be very convenient for condensed matter theorists to select a given model and perform DMRG. Is there a way to specify the hamiltonian for a system in terms of its matrix elements in ALPS?
