Actually, Notepad does save ASCII (ANSI, to be more precise, but that works as well). When you click "Save As..." in Nothepad, make sure that the Encodong setting at the bottom of a pop-up dialog window is set on ANSI.

The problem is that Notepad does not save the text in ASCII. The best is if you just download the file parm1a.

I saved parm1a given in wiki tutorials into a text format in notepad. I also tried writing the same lines in notepad. Then the most likely reason is that you used an editor which does not store ASCII. How did you create the parm1a file?

The problem that Kirill refers to is that he entered a file in Unicode and not ASCII. Another problem might be your standard C library - which version of ALPS do you use on which operating system?

Check the encoding of your job file and make sure it's ASCII; I have had such a hard-to-locate issue which kept me perplexed for some time. Good luck, K.S.
