I saved parm1a given in wiki tutorials into a text format in notepad. I also tried writing the same lines in notepad. Then the most likely reason is that you used an editor which does not store ASCII. How did you create the parm1a file?

The problem that Kirill refers to is that he entered a file in Unicode and not ASCII. Another problem might be your standard C library - which version of ALPS do you use on which operating system?
