Dear Equals

Money again… J (and a great idea from the SNF!!!!)

SNF: New family support measures for postdocs: 120% support grant

In its Action Plan 2013-2016, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) places an emphasis on ensuring that a sufficient number of young scientists come to the fore in Switzerland. One corresponding measure is the new "120% support grant", which enables postdocs to stay on track with their academic career despite family commitments.

The "120% support grant" is to be introduced on 1 June 2013 as a means of encouraging young scientists and increasing the appeal of an academic career. The purpose of the grant is to help researchers find the right balance between their academic career and family commitments.

Contribution towards childcare costs
The support grants are open to postdocs in SNSF-funded projects who are striving to pursue an academic career while looking after family members at the same time. The grants allow the researchers to reduce their working hours. Using the freed-up work-time percentage and an additional 20% financed by the SNSF, they can hire a "support person" to work on their project. Alternatively, grantees can request a contribution towards childcare costs; the two options may also be combined. With this support measure, the SNSF aims to prevent or reduce delays for postdocs with family commitments who are also pursuing an academic career.

The "120% support grants" are evaluated by the SNSF within two months. Applications may be submitted at the earliest on the first day after registration of the postdoc as an employee of the project and no later than four months after the expiry of the grant via the web platform mySNF under "Supplementary grants". The support measures only start after the maternity leave.

Information online as of June
Further information on this new measure and on the submission procedure can be found in the relevant regulations as well as in the guidelines for the "120% support grant". Both documents will be published on the SNSF website as of 1 June 2013.

Kind regards,

Equal Team
